The Secondary school at Hill Valley Academy comprises of the Lower Secondary Year ,7-9 and the Upper Secondar ,Year 10-11. Our Primary focus is to successfully prepare students for externally marked International Exams at the end of Year 9 and 11.

We hold high expectations and ambitions of academic excellence while also encouraging a sense of responsibility , self-discipline, and confidence in our students. We balance academic pursuits with other activities to promote a well-rounded human being, capable of making the most of what life has to offer.

Lower Secondary Year 7 - 9

Our students study a wide range of subjects with our trained and qualified teachers. The variety of subjects studied places them in a good position to select the particular subjects they will undertake at IGCSE in Years 10 and 11.

Pupils are taught using the British Cambridge International Curriculum, which encourages them to be confident, responsible, reflective, innovative, and engaged learners. They are prepared to sit the Cambridge International Checkpoint exams in Maths, English, Science and Global Perspectives.

Other non-Cambridge assessed subjects taught in Lower Secondary include History, Business Studies, French, Arabic, Geography, ICT, Islamic Studies (for Muslim Students), Drama and Sport.

Upper Secondary Year 10 - 11 IGCSE

Students opt to study in either the Science, Arts or Commercial Departments for a duration of two years. Our trained and qualified teachers will prepare them to sit the Cambridge IGCSE qualifications at the end of Year 11.

An Entrance Examination in Mathematics and English Language is required for entry into Year 10

The fabric/material for school uniform, the sports uniform and school badge MUST be purchased directly from the school. The style of the school uniform must not be altered in any way.

Except on approved or special occasions, students must wear the following regulation school uniform every day.

Year 7 – 9 (Lower Secondary) :

BOYS: Short sleeve white button- down shirt, dark blue long trousers, dark blue socks, black sport /school shoes

GIRLS: Short sleeve white button-down shirt, calf length (at least 5inches below the knee) or ankle length dark blue skirt, dark blue socks, black sport/ school shoes.

Year 10 – 11 (Upper Secondary) :

BOYS: Long sleeve white button- down shirt, dark blue long trousers, school tie, dark blue socks, black sport /school shoes

School Hours – Year 7 to Year 11

These students should arrive at 8:00 AM if being dropped off so that they can participate in assembly /home room time before starting lessons at 8:20 AM. School finishes for these students at 3:00 PM. Assembly is held on Tuesdays and Fridays. The Friday assembly is our special mentions/ student of the week assembly where individual students are commended for their performance and achievements during the past week.

Lessons:

There are seven class periods a day and each period is 45 minutes long. Lessons include Physical Education (Year 7-10), Drama (Year 7-9).

Break:

There is a 20-minute morning break from 10:35 AM – 10:55 AM. Students have a snack that is usually brought from home. We try to encourage a healthy snack, this includes fruit/ vegetables, with water or natural fruit juice. Fizzy drinks and sugary drinks are to be kept at a moderate level. There is a selection of snacks available for purchase from the canteen

Lunch:

Lunch is from 1:10 PM-1:55 PM. A hot lunch is served following a menu designed in consultation with the Parents’ Association and is included in the school fees. The cafeteria is serviced and serves a mixture of Western and African dishes.

Homeroom time/ Classroom Cleaning:

At HVA, we believe that class cleaning is very good tool to encourage responsibility, collaboration, and cleanliness among students. Classroom cleaning takes place at the end of the school day . It is a short but important part of our day of which every student is expected to participate on a rota basis.

Fridays:

Following lunch and Jumma communal prayer( for Muslim students and staff) there will be no academic lessons . This time is used for whole school sporting activities, interhouse competitions, debates, guest speakers, and other extra-curricular activities.

A school bus service is offered. Alternatively, parents/guardians may opt to drop off and collect their children from school.

At Hill Valley Academy Communication between home and school is very important.

    • Parents/guardians will receive notices throughout the year about general school events, activities, special announcements and changes to our normal routine at short notice via WhatsApp.
 
    • Each class will have a dedicated WhatsApp group set up for teachers to communicate homework, tests, assessments and general information pertaining to the class as a whole. This is one-way communication only.
 
    • Teachers may make direct phone calls to parents via the Admin phone to discuss any issue of serious concern. These calls and the content of the conversation will be logged.
 
    • Parents/guardians may request an appointment with an individual teacher/s via Admin
 
  • Parents may contact / visit Admin during the working hours of 8:00 AM -4:00 PM Monday -Friday.
 
  • Parent-Teacher conferences to discuss student progress with individual teachers are held once a term.
